Rooms with Views, Vistas with Stories
March 12 – September 30, 2017

This exhibition explores a group of fourteen miniature watercolor drawings depicting interiors, landscapes, and social activities in nineteenth-century Rhode Island and Pennsylvania. Owned by Evergreen’s first Mrs. Garrett, Alice Whitridge Garrett, and documenting people and places from her family history, these rare renderings by self-taught artist Joseph Shoemaker Russell give a vivid glimpse of American domestic life from 1814 to just before the Civil War. They are complemented by other possessions treasured by Mrs. Garrett, including an important Pennsylvania slant-front desk and what is believed to be her first portrait.
