SUMMARY:The Lifted Veil: Photography by Phyllis Arbesman Berger
DESCRIPTION:ABOUT THE EXHIBITION\n\nFor many years\, fine art photographer Phyllis Arbesman Berger saw the world through a cloudy veil because of cataracts. During that time\, she concentrated on making images in black and white. And then a miracle: cataract surgery and the world came alive in blazing color\, full of intensity\, as well as dreamy subtlety. \nThis group of photographs\, ranging from infrared to color\, shows how her view of the world has changed by revisiting photographs of her favorite places in Ireland; Brittany\, France; and the Eastern Shore of Maryland\, and reimagining them in glorious technicolor through the magic of Photoshop. The exhibition will be on view in Evergreen’s North Wing Gallery from April 29 through September 25\, 2022. Hours are Tuesday-Sunday\, 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Closed Mondays and July Fourth.\n \nPictured: View from the Edge: Cliffs of Moher County Clare\, Ireland \nABOUT THE ARTIST\nPhyllis Berger BFA\, MFA Maryland Institute college of Art is the Photography Coordinator for the Center for Visual Arts at the Johns Hopkins University where she has been an instructor for the past 26 years. \nAs a practicing fine art photographer Berger is a recipient of two artist residencies in Rochefort en Terre\, Brittany\, France\, where she pursued her love of the landscape\, and she has shared this passion with JHU students with courses in Ireland and Australia. Berger has been a lecturer for JHU Alumni Journeys in Croatia\, The Galapagos Islands\, Peru\, Costa Rica and Panama. \nHer work is in numerous private collections and has been shown at the Baltimore Museum of Art\, The Museum of Rochefort en Terre\, the Hopkins Review (where she was a photo editor)\, and in the collection of the Banneker-Douglass Museum.

SUMMARY:Homewood Museum Architecture Lecture: The Material World of Eyre Hall with Carl Lounsbury
DESCRIPTION:ABOUT THE PROGRAM\nBuilt in 1759 by Littleton Eyre\, Eyre Hall on Virginia’s Eastern Shore is one of only a handful of houses in Virginia today that is owned by descendants of its original builders. In addition\, it retains a rich collection of family objects accumulated by several generations of Eyres. As a result\, Eyre Hall is a microcosm of Virginia history. Drawing on research from his latest book\, The Material World of Eyre Hall: Four Centuries of Chesapeake History\, architecture scholar Carl Lounsbury will discuss the history of the property and consider its many legacies. The talk will be preceded by a reception and book-signing at Homewood Museum. \n5-6 p.m. Book-signing and reception at Homewood Museum \n6:30-8 p.m. Talk and Q&A in the Merrick Barn \n  \nABOUT THE SPEAKER\n \nCarl Lounsbury retired in 2016 as the Senior Architectural Historian at the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation. Over a 35-year career there\, he was responsible for long-term research projects such as the study of English and Colonial American public buildings\, churches\, meetinghouses\, and theaters; and the terminology\, practice\, and technology of preindustrial building. He has also had an extensive career consulting with museums\, historical and preservation societies\, academic institutions\, and homeowners in the investigation and restoration of historic buildings. Lounsbury earned his undergraduate degree in history and English from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and received his MA and Ph.D. from George Washington University. He is currently Adjunct Associate Professor of History at the College of William and Mary. His publications include An Illustrated Glossary of Early Southern Architecture and Landscape and The Courthouses of Early Virginia\, both of which won the Abbott Lowell Cummings Award from the Vernacular Architecture Forum.
